Agape love involves commitment, faithfulness, and an act of the will. ![]() Nor does it refer to brotherly or close friendship love, for which the Greek word Philia is used. Unlike our English word love, agape is not employed in the New Testament to refer to romantic or sexual love. The essence of agape love is goodwill, benevolence, and willful delight in the object of love. How is “agape love” different from other types of love? It refers to God’s in-depth love for people, and people’s love for both God and others. In the Greek language used when the New Testament was written, there are four different words for love – with each describing a specific attitude and application. The Greek word agape is often translated as “love” in the New Testament. In fact, unconditional love is love without expectations. Unconditional love is when you love someone no matter what they do and have no expectation of payment. We are also expected to apply this kind of love to our neighbors.
